No lions or tigers, but BEARS oh my! – July 8, 2017
Off to Banana Point to meet Scott for a tour of Anan Bear Observatory. They like shooting things here, especially the signs as exhibited behind me and Tigger.
We were picked up by a jet boat and whisked through the waters to Wrangell. We had an hours wait so we explored the shops. This took about 15 minutes, but Ace Hardware was a highlight. Another hour jet boat trip to Anan. We had dos and don’t lecture – highlights were, don’t use the toilet at the observatory as the rangers have to take out the waste by bucket and don’t like to do that and if you see a bear stay behind the guide. I didn’t need to be told the last one. Now of course I am not worried as I can run faster than Doug. A forced hike of 40 minutes on a two foot wide boardwalk covered with wire mesh to the observatory. No Sherpas in sight to carry our 100 pounds of camera equipment, I am sure this was in the brochure. I needed a nap by the time we got there.
Imagine my surprise upon arriving at the observatory to be greeted by a ranger who looked exactly like my sister! And then one of the guests looked eerily like Liza’s best friend Janet. Twilight Zone. The ranger was much friendly and more helpful than my sister – kidding.
The Bears did not disappoint. So many pink salmon trying to swim up stream and the Bears were waiting with fork and knife in hand. Black bears, brown bears, baby black bears with Eagles, crows and Ravens waiting for the scraps. After a couple of hours we were pried off the perch and sent back home. It was too short a visit. Enjoy a few photos.
